Does this sound familiar?
Few of us could give an accurate definition of dyslexia or learning disabilities and try to keep up with the research on what causes reading difficulties.  But if you are a sufferer, some of these things might be familiar:

  • I find large blocks of text off-putting.
  • I am an intelligent person!  I can think things through and solve problems – but my slow reading speed holds me back.
  • I read so slowly that I get bored.
  • Reading makes me tired very quickly.
  • I constantly have to re-read whole chunks of text.
  • My reading difficulties take the fun out of learning new things.
  • I find it really hard to learn new technical words.
  • I know that I can reach intelligent conclusions, but my poor spelling and grammar makes my work seem less credible.
  • I do not think in straight lines – I like to brainstorm but find it hard to record my ideas in note form.
  • I do not like reading in black and white – I prefer colour.

You are not alone

Don’t worry if you answered yes to any or all of these questions – you are not alone.  You are one of the many people in the country who are capable of acquiring new information, solving problems and reaching solutions much more quickly and capably  than they can read or write.  This is a cruel and condition which may well be holding you back with your studies or with your career – and there is no miracle cure.  However, there is a huge body of technology available to help reduce the impact of your condition.

Working wit the right combination of technologies can make a very significant difference to the speed at which you can acquire new information and present written work.  The objective of all of these technologies is the same - To help you work at a speed and quality to match your intellect.

If you can achieve this you will find:

·         Reading large blocks of text becomes less intimidating

·         Learning new things becomes fun rather

·         Study can be fun – not an ordeal!

·         Because you are working faster you get bored less easily

·         Reading is less strenuous so you get less tired

·         Your written work becomes something to be proud of not embarrassed by

·         Your self confidence will blossom

Dragon Naturally Speaking

·         Dragon is a clever piece of software that converts your spoken words into text on a computer screen.  You will need a good quality headset and then just talk to your computer (telling it where to insert punctuation) and it will produce your document automatically.

·         It does take a bit of getting used to but advances in this technology in recent years have made this an outstanding tool to speed up the process of document production for those people who find it hard to get their ideas down on paper.
