Word Prediction
Penfriend XP works with your word processor and accurately guesses the word you are typing. For example, when you have entered the first or second letter, you will be given choices of words to choose from. When the word you desire appears in the prediction window, one simple key press will finish the word for you. If you desire, Penfriend will offer you the next word as well!

Easy to Edit Lexicons
Penfriend XP is configurable to suit the preferences and needs of different users and it is easy for teachers and tutors to select preferences and add topic-specific vocabulary.
A great feature of Penfriend XP is the ability to quickly and easily select a new lexicon by ?dragging and dropping? existing lexicons into the prediction window.
With version 3, you can create empty lexicons and add words one at a time. For example, you might create a lexicon based around colours or animals for young learners or science terms or any topic! This helps build word knowledge and referent cognition.
Whether created by you or pre-loaded, these lexicons are easy to use and easy to create according to your needs. You can even ban words should you have the need.
Spelling errors and their frequency can be tracked and analysed to assist with spelling strategies.
Speech Feedback
Penfriend can read the letters, words and sentences you are typing. It can also read and highlight any text transferred to the clipboard.
The Penfriend website allows you to download a variety of free voices.
On Screen Keyboards
Penfriend XP also includes an on-screen keyboard which provides increased access for users who are unable to use a standard keyboard. It is also valuable for those with dyslexia, reducing the visual strain of glancing between keyboard and screen.
The on-screen keyboard works alongside Penfriend XPs predictor window. Users can choose to use the function F keys, number keys, or number keypad, to select and enter predictions.

Penfriend XL offers flexible screen reading which reads menus and dialogues on your desktop, text from your word processor or other applications and text from web pages.
Spell Checking, Thesaurus, Dictionary Features
The screen reader in Penfriend XL makes it possible to read and highlight alternative spellings, synonyms and dictionary meanings available in Microsoft Word. For example, Penfriend works seamlessly with Word?s built-in spell checker and Thesaurus. It's simple to use too! Quickly find the word you want to look up by right clicking and Penfriend XL will read the options provided. Another option is to select the Look Up facility in Words Task Pane and access the range of reference books including dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauruses and other applications. Penfriend will read any word or phrase highlighted in Word?s online dictionary helping the learner to contextualise and understand word meanings. Another great feature we offer our customers is if you have appropriate voices you can access dictionaries in any of the languages Word offers. or visually impaired individuals you can enlarge text and be automatically transferred to the clipboard.
