KeyStrokes Mac 3.6
A mouse, or a mouse emulator, is used to select and enter characters by pointing and clicking on the keys. Operations that require simultaneous action of more than one key are performed using the special 'sticky key' feature of KeyStrokes. This allows command key (and other modifier key-click combinations) to be performed. Characters are sent to applications running natively on OS 9 (KeyStrokes 3.1), OS 10 and into applications running in Classic Mode.
Seven resizable keyboard layouts are provided, including a numer pad layout. The layouts differ by whether they include a number pad, function keys, navigation keys or ordering of the keys in QWERTY or alphabetical order. The simple keyboard layouts are suited for children or people with limited cognitive ability. Key separation and other aspects of key and keyboard background appearance can be modified. The keyboards can be resized by selecting several preset sizes - or they can be 'drag-sized' like any window. All international keyboards supported by the operating system are supported by KeyStrokes.
PolyPredix? KeyStrokes provides advanced multilingual word prediction. The PolyPredix? word prediction engine does word completion, next word prediction and multi-word prediction in languages that use the Roman and non-Roman character sets such as Cyrillic. The PolyPredix? prediction engine offers many time and effort saving features that enhance user productivity. There is the capability to display one line of text as it is being entered in the PolyPredix area (Typing Field) of the KeyStrokes keyboard. This feature can minimise eye strain by reducing the requirement to redirect one's gaze from the application to the keyboard and back.
KeyStrokes provides audio feedback to the user and in addition, it can speak the characters entered in English. The capability to speak is only available while running under Mac OSX.
Smart Transparency (available only on Mac OSX) can be used to automatically "hide" the keyboard when it is not being used. If the mouse is moved outside of the keyboard window it can be configured to fade from fully opaque to any level of transparency. This will provide visual access to items under the keyboard window when text entry is not underway. The final level of transparency, time to fade and fade rate are all configured using KeyStrokes preferences.
Dwellix? Dwellix is a utility for entering mouse button clicks for those who cannot physically actuate a switch. The Dwellix utility can be accessed from the keyboard toolbar and/or from the floating palette shown above. Dwellix monitors the mouse pointer and after the pointer is motionless for a programmable time it performs the selected button action, this is known as a dwell-click.
In its default configuration, the action taken is a single mouse click. This single click can be modified by dwell-clicking on one of the other Dwellix buttons. Then the next time the pointer is held motionless for the dwell time Dwellix will perform the modified action. For example, a double click is performed by dwell-clicking on the "Double-click" button then repositioning the pointer and holding it motionless to perform a double click. Dwellix then reverts back to performing default single clicks. The default dwell click action can be changed to one of the other operations. This allows one to do repetitive double clicks, right clicks, or Drag and Drop operations.
The palette may be customised for display of some or all of the Dwellix buttons. Text labels will only be displayed if the buttons are large enough and if text display is enabled. The palette may be drag-sized between its smallest and largest sizes.
There are three status indicators used by the Dwellix utility. One is audio feedback that sounds when the dwell time expires and the selected action is taken. The other two indicators are visual. Between the Title Bar and the first button is a horizontal bar that "fills-up" left to right as the dwell time expires. The third indicator is the left and right button indicators that show the state of the mouse button(s). When the left mouse button is actuated the ellipse on the bottom left will be highlighted while the button is down.
For those who cannot hold the pointer perfectly still for the dwell time there is a setting to ignore insignificant movements from within an imaginary circle positioned around the mouse pointer. The diameter of this invisible circle is adjusted from within the KeyStrokes preferences window. However, when the pointer is hovering over a KeyStroke or Dwellix key the key boundary is used to define the Dwellix area instead of the imaginary circle.
