Grid Keys offers complete computer control, including typing with an on-screen keyboard, mouse control and direct control of Windows.

Access to Grid Keys

Grid Keys can be used with many alternate input devices for people who do not use a standard keyboard and mouse:

  • Switch input - with advanced options for more effective switch use
  • Mouse input - including trackballs, joystick-mice, etc.
  • Touch screen
  • Head pointer

    Custom grids

Grid Keys comes with ready made setups for a number of common access situations:

  • Switch
  • Advanced switch
  • Pointer (e.g. mouse, touch screen)
  • Dwell Click (e.g. head pointer)
  • Auditory (switch input with audio assistance)

The screens in Grid Keys are called "grids". These can be on-screen keyboards, mouse grids, computer control grids, or any combination! You can have a few grids or many grids - it is up to you.

Developing custom grids for Windows programs can make them easier to use. For example, a grid for Microsoft word can include "save", "load", "bold", etc. Grids for many popular applications are already available, and you can modify these or create your own to support additional software.

Grids are available for a wide range of popular applications.

Grid Keys and The Grid 2

Grid Keys is closely related to The Grid 2. If you only need Computer Control, then Grid Keys is right for you.

All the features of Grid Keys are available in the Grid 2 plus many more: The Grid 2 also includes voice-output communication, environment control, eye gaze support and many other features.

Grids created in Grid Keys can be used in The Grid 2. Grids created in The Grid 2 can be used in Grid Keys, but if they use features only present in The Grid 2 then these will not be available.

    Take control

Computer Control encompasses typing with an on-screen keyboard, mouse control and direct control of Windows using advanced features of Grid Keys.

    - Keyboard control

Your on-screen keyboard layout in Grid Keys is completely up to you. Keyboards are included with alphabetical and QWERTY layouts. There are also layouts optimised for switch scanning (arranged by frequency-of-use) or for auditory scanning. You can also create your own layouts, which could include extra keys that you find useful (e.g. accented characters, special symbols, etc).

    - Mouse control

You can move the mouse pointer with Grid Keys if you are using switches to access your computer. You can use 'radar' or 'crosshair' pointer movement to perform clicks, drags, double clicks, etc.

    -Windows control

Grid Keys goes far beyond the ability to replace the mouse and keyboard. It is able to control many aspects of Windows directly. This is especially valuable in reducing the frustration of switch users trying to control the mouse.

Grid Keys has many built in commands that allow you to:

  • Launch and switch between programs
  • Navigate menus (including the Start menu) and dialogue boxes
  • Move and resize windows
  • Navigate web pages
  • Select and edit text

Grid Keys can either be a floating window, or it can be automatically docked with your application. You can also use switches to move the keyboard grids to different places on the screen, or to hide it for a temporary view of the full screen.

Grid Keys can be used with almost all Windows applications for Vista or XP.

Grids are available for a wide range of popular applications, including:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Internet Explorer
  • Firefox
  • Windows Mail & Outlook
  • Windows Media Player
  • WordPad
  • Calculator
  • Solitaire
  • iTunes
